As we age, many people complain of fatigue, often linked to nutritional deficiencies. To address this, various supplements and multivitamins are commonly prescribed. These come in the form of pills, drinks, or powders and are intended to replenish essential nutrients such as vitamins, minerals, calcium, iron, and protein.

While these supplements can offer certain benefits, they also carry potential side effects that are frequently overlooked. Medical experts caution that, despite their usefulness, nutritional supplements should never be considered a substitute for a well-balanced diet.

According to experts, the use of supplements has become increasingly common among women over the age of 30. These multivitamins are particularly important for vegetarians, but the required dosage varies based on individual lifestyles. Therefore, it’s crucial to take supplements only under a doctor’s guidance. Many women in their 30s and 40s start using multivitamins on their own, but it’s essential to understand that multivitamins have their own side effects and should be used with caution.

Dr. Seema Gulati, from India’s National Institute of Diabetes, Obesity, and Cholesterol, highlights that self-medication is a common practice in urban areas. “Instead of consulting a doctor, people often rely on pharmacies for medications, whether it’s for pain relief or diagnosing their symptoms, and this can sometimes do more harm than good,” she says.

Dr. Seema points out that many individuals turn to Google or social media for medical advice, leading to the increased use of medications without proper guidance. Some medicines, including supplements, are available without a doctor’s prescription, which can be more harmful than beneficial.

She warns that excessive intake of vitamins, such as vitamin A and vitamin E, can lead to symptoms like vomiting and blurred vision. All doctors agree that supplements should be taken only in the recommended amounts, as exceeding the dosage offers no added benefit and may cause harm.

Dr Seema also explains that fat-soluble vitamins like vitamin E and omega-3 can accumulate in the body if taken without medical advice, leading to various health issues. While vitamin E can help lower blood pressure, excessive use can also affect lung function, making it important to take these supplements only under medical supervision.
