Israel carried out a strike on Friday that killed Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah, along with 20 other key members of the group, according to Israeli sources. Hezbollah confirmed Nasrallah’s death the following day. Additionally, Iran’s state media reported that Abbas Nilforoushan, a senior general in Iran’s Revolutionary Guards Corps, was also killed in the attack.
U.S. President Joe Biden called the strike a “measure of justice” for Nasrallah’s victims, while Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, vowed that the death “will not go unavenged.” Reports suggest that Khamenei was moved to a secure location following the event.
Throughout the weekend, cross-border skirmishes between Israel and Hezbollah escalated, with Israel claiming to have killed more senior figures within the group. Lebanese officials reported that over 100 people were killed on Sunday, bringing the total death toll in the region to more than 1,000 in the past two weeks. Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati stated that Israeli airstrikes may have displaced up to one million people, marking what could be the largest displacement in Lebanon’s history.
In addition to targeting Hezbollah, Israel also struck the Iranian-backed Houthi group in Yemen, citing retaliatory actions against recent Houthi attacks.
