Herat, Afghanistan – At least 12 people have died after an earthquake in western Afghanistan on Monday, an official said. The victims died when the roof of their house collapsed in the Qadis region in the western province of Badghis, regional manager Mohammad Saleh Purdel told AFP. The seismic was 5.3 magnitude, according to the US Geological Survey. “Several people were also injured in the quake today,” Purdel said, adding that the dead included women and children. The Qadis are one of the worst-hit by the drought, benefiting from international aid over the past 20 years.
